All words are not equal.  There are words in Spanish which are used more than others.  Can you give me an example of a word which is used in a lot of expressions in Spanish?

The problem with your question is that there are so many words in Spanish which I could give as an example.  Soga would be a good word.  The literal meaning of soga is: rope, cord, leather strap, hangman’s rope.  The following are some common and popular expressions with ‘soga’: hablar de la soga en la casa del ahorcado (to say the wrong thing/ to say something totally inappropriate), hacer soga (to lag behind), estar con la soga al cuello (to have one’s back to the wall/ to have one’s neck in a noose/ to be in a pretty fix),  estar con la soga al cuello (to be in immediate or imminent danger), siempre se quiebra la soga por lo más delgado (the weakest goes to the wall), dar soga a uno (to make fun of), no hay que hablar de la soga en la casa del ahorcado (there’s a time and place for everything).

I want to put some spice in the English that I speak.  I can speak and write standard English with no problem but I don’t know many expressions.  Can you give me the English translation of some common Spanish expressions?

As you know, you can not translate expressions literally; therefore, I will give the expression in Spanish and how that expression is said in English:

Hay gato encerrado (there’s something fishy), buscar tres pies al gato (to make a mountain out of a mole hill), ir al grano (to get to the point), llamar al pan pan y al vino vino (to call a spade a spade), tomar el pelo a uno (to pull someone’s leg), no tener pelos en la lengua (to not mince words), en un abrir y cerrar de ojos (in a wink of an eye)
